    There's a misconception that QA interviews are easier than developer interviews. That's completely wrong. Modern QA engineers write code, design frameworks, debug CI pipelines, and make architectural decisions about test infrastructure. The bar has gone up significantly in the last few years.

    Whether you're interviewing for a manual QA role, an SDET position, or a test automation engineer role, here are the questions that keep coming up — and how to handle them.

    Testing Fundamentals

    1. What's the difference between manual and automation testing? When would you choose one over the other?

    How to answer: Manual testing is exploratory, flexible, and great for usability, ad-hoc scenarios, and areas where the UI changes frequently. Automation is repeatable, scalable, and essential for regression, smoke tests, and CI/CD pipelines. The real answer: you need both. Automate the stable, repetitive stuff. Keep manual testing for the creative, exploratory stuff that requires human judgment. Don't fall into the trap of saying "automate everything."

    2. Explain the testing pyramid. How do you decide what to test at each level?

    How to answer: Unit tests at the base (fast, many, cheap), integration tests in the middle (fewer, test component interactions), E2E tests at the top (fewest, slow, expensive).     How to answer: Unit tests run on every commit (fast feedback). Integration and API tests run on PR creation. Full E2E suite runs on merge to main or before deployment. Use parallelization to keep pipeline times under 15-20 minutes. Fail the build on test failures — no exceptions, or the tests become meaningless. Report results to Slack or Teams so the team sees them without checking Jenkins.

    12. How do you measure test effectiveness? What metrics matter?

    15. You join a team with zero automated tests and a 2-week release cycle. What's your plan?

    How to answer: Don't try to boil the ocean. Week 1-2: Identify the top 5 critical user flows. Write smoke tests for those. Get them in the CI pipeline. Month 1: Expand to cover the top 20 regression scenarios. Month 2-3: Add API tests for core services. Set up reporting and dashboards. The key message: deliver value fast. A working smoke suite in week one is better than a perfect framework in month three. Show you're pragmatic, not perfectionist.

    16. A developer says "QA signed off on this" after a bug is found in production. How do you respond?

    How to answer: Quality is a team responsibility, not a QA gate. Push for shared ownership — developers write unit tests, QA designs test strategy, everyone reviews test plans. This is a culture question. Address the immediate bug without being defensive, then have the larger conversation about shifting quality left. If your team treats QA as a gatekeeper, bugs will always slip through.
